Swindon Town eye move for Brighton's Barker

Swindon Advertiser: Brighton's George Barker Brighton's George Barker

SWINDON Town have been tracking young Brighton & Hove Albion striker George Barker ahead of a possible move for the 22-year-old.

The Advertiser understands Barker, who has yet to score a professional goal, is a target for the Robins in January as chairman Lee Power and manager Mark Cooper search for a frontman to fill the void left by the return of Nicky Ajose to Peterborough and Nile Ranger’s imminent departure.

Barker came through Brighton’s youth development programme before signing his first professional deal with the Sussex club in 2010.

After loan stints at Lewes and Barnet, where he made his Football League debut in December 2012, Barker finally made his Brighton bow at Barnsley in March.

He made three appearances in total last term and came off the bench during the Seagulls’ 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Championship earlier this term before being shipped out on loan to Newport.

Barker made just two appearances during his time at Rodney Parade, however, both in goalless draws against Cheltenham Town and Oxford United, before returning to the Amex Stadium.

Swindon assistant coach Luke Williams, who was in charge of Brighton’s academy up until the end of June last year, is known to be a big fan of Barker and the Advertiser understands it is Williams who has encouraged the powers that be at the County Ground to take a look at the hitman.

Barker was prominent for Brighton in under 21 and development football prior to his switch to the pro ranks but at five foot, eight inches he does not appear to be the target man Cooper has been longing for.

In May, Barker was one of four footballers found not guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Brighton hotel.

Alongside Lewis Dunk, Anton Rodgers and Steve Cook, Barker was cleared after the woman who made the claims against the quartet admitted lying to police and her employers.

Barker said outside the Old Bailey following the verdict: “Since the day of my arrest in January 2011, I have always vigorously protested my innocence.

“Having to live with these allegations over the last two years has been enormously difficult for me, for my family and for my friends.

“Being able to rely on them at all times has been hugely reassuring during what has seemed at times like a nightmare.”

Meanwhile, it has transpired that Bournemouth may have rejected Town’s recent approach for Wes Thomas on behalf of the player.

Swindon submitted a bid of around £100,000 for the striker 10 days ago but saw it rebuffed by the Cherries, who the Advertiser understands would have been willing to accept the offer on face value only for Thomas to decline the move.

the question is whether we need a striker with a bit of guile and experience and this lad doesn't sound like the answer to me - what was it again, 5 appearances to date? I'd be happy taking him but with someone else who knows where the back of the net is

Not wishing to be negative, however here goes, hasn't scored a pro goal and never heard of him. This isn't the guy who will fire us into the championship.

I know we're watching the pennies but surely there's others out there?

I know where your coming from buddy, but your post does sound very familiar when Charlie Austins name was mentioned. I'm sure if this lad was put seven leagues down he'd be smashing them in also, like our very own Mr Austin....

Problem is you never really know if a player will work out - Austin came from non league and scored a hatful of goals for us, Magera was a Czech international and was largely useless. You can pay big money or small money, either way you're taking a chance.

Obviously if a player has a good record it's more likely he'll replicate that form moreso than an unproven player coming good overnight, but at least Williams is familiar with the player and hopefully could get the best out of him.

This lad is most clearly one to put in the mix with Waldon, Storey, Jackson. Expect other names to unfold as the month progresses. The club will try development players from lower or upper levels with a view to the future. lets not judge too hastily.

If Luke Williams rates him then he must be good. We might not have much money but Power, Cooper and Williams have excellent judgement - I wish they had been involved when we had a board with cash. I guess Barker would be more of a replacement for Ajose than the big hold up man (Ranger!!!) that we need. Like Micawber said, something will turn up. COYMR

What a signing a striker with no first team goals , they must have pulled all the strings to get this one . We need experience on the field not another kid . Is it not bad enough blooding spurs kids so they are in the window to be sold . Suspect he will be on low wages as never scoring a league goal who would want him ? Another mess up by power I think !!!

Hope we get someone else too but long way to go in the window.

Harley ... have you ever loaned anyone anything ? Do you expect to get back what you loan ? or for you does charity mean everyone else gives and you (*****) life off the proceeds.

Back on subject can't really believe all the opinions writing this player off before he has ever kicked a ball. There is only one opinion that really counts, the coach who worked with him at Brighton. If his judgement is that the player will be of value to us then that is the opinion that counts as I trust that judgement ahead of anyone who has never ever seen the guy play.

Plenty of examples.. Kasim couldn't get a game in the conference, Austin never played even 6th tier football .... the list goes on..... all that is needed is to give him a chance, if he succeeed great, if not then he will be moved on as has El Gabbas and a number of other examples.

And with Charlie he had been smashiing them in for fun before joining us, hypothetical if this lad could have done the same, but he hasn't unless his earlier career is rich with goals, under 11's not counting.

I'm sure you included Louis but most of us were aware of Charlie before joining, it's just that he was unproven at a higher level, which obviously was dispelled over the following two seasons.

Yes that dreadful man Power, gets involved with our club, uses his contacts to get in loads of brilliant young players, puts a million quid in to keep our club afloat, tries to make sure our club has a sustainable model, doesn't take any cr4p when negotiating for players, gets us playing good football, seems to have a great relationship with Cooper and Williams ....... how many more mess ups is he going to make????
The money he put in to the club he took out after 4 days I believe and as for the players from his mate Sherwood they are not really for us they are there to be in the shop window and spurs will sell . Apart from hall can't see anyone after him can you ?
Byrne, Luongo, Barthram? All our players and all very good acquisitions from Spurs. At the moment, with the financial circumstances our club is in, loans represent an excellent way forward. I don't mind players coming here and placing themselves in the shop window by playing well for us because it benefits us as well as the player.

After the near meltdown last season I'm just relieved to be in the top half of the table, let alone with an outside chance of a play-off finish. I think Mark Cooper does a great job within the constraints placed upon him and he never whinges about it. I had some reservations when he was appointed but not now, he does a good honest job for our club.

Harley ... have you ever loaned anyone anything ?

Cleuso, Agreed, no player should be dispelled before he even arrives, but if we do sign him he does seem one more for the future rather than a short term fix to lend support to a very under strength forward line of 1 available player with any experience. (Storey injured again, Ranger, El Gabas and Jose left the club)., tells it's own story really

For the visit of Posh, expect Jose to turn out against us and I can't see any other line up for us than 1 up front supported by a pack of mid-fielder players, with no options to change to a 4-4-2 should that ploy prove to be ineffective.

The last 21/22 year old unheard of striker that we signed who also had not scored and been on loan to many clubs then proceeded to score over 20 goals each season for the next 3 years - Super Sammy Parkin

This lad is most clearly one to put in the mix with Waldon, Storey, Jackson. Expect other names to unfold as the month progresses. The club will try development players from lower or upper levels with a view to the future. lets not judge too hastily.
Totally agree far too many fans think we are wealthy club and possibly been spoiled by Blacks regime in charge. We need to unearth these gems to survive in all honesty. Luke Williams will be no doubt aware of the lads ability and saw him bang plenty of goals in at youth level so could prove a decent signing. But the main point here is to accept the way our club will be managed in its present state with little money about. At the end of the day we are actually buying the lad so its another player on the books and one loan less.
