SWINDON boxing promoter Keith Mayo believes he signed “something special” in Ryan Martin.

Mayo has been an avid follower of Martin’s amateur career at Walcot ABC and says he is delighted to have finally persuaded the youngster to enter boxing’s paid ranks.

The 19-year-old will make his professional debut on Mayo’s next show at Swindon’s Oasis Leisure Centre in March and the promoter is excited at the prospect.

“I’ve been after Ryan for some time now – about two years or so I think,” said Mayo. “I’ve always thought he has what it takes to progress into the professional game and I’m so excited now he has signed.

“I think he could be something special but it’s too early to start making predictions or anything.

“We are going to get him out big time. He’ll be fighting on all my shows and we want to keep him busy. He has got the potential for sure.

“He has just got natural talent. He has a good punch on him, moves well and is just a good all-rounder.

“He has a similar style to Ricky Hatton I’d say.”

Although Mayo has had to be patient for Martin to sign professional, he believes the youngster’s timing is perfect.

“Fair play to Ryan, he kept saying he’d sign when he was ready and now he’s done that,” added Mayo.

“I think I’ve got him at the right time. He had time out with his mates and that which is important and he’s only just coming up to 20 years old.

“I can tell he is enjoying it and it’s clear to see boxing has always been in his heart.

“It’s going to be a busy year for him and I want him training every day and he’ll be getting plenty of decent sparring.

“I also want him to train full-time because that’s what Kelvin Young has done and you can see the results – he’s the IBO Intercontinental champion now.

“I’ve always said he would make a good professional when he was an amateur and now I can’t wait to see what he can do at this level.”
