SWINDON Town’s miserable away form continued this afternoon as they were beaten 2-0 by Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium.

A goal in either half, from Leon Legge and Michael Harriman, handed all three points to the Gills who were good value for their victory against a subdued and error-prone Swindon. Town remain without an away win since November 16.

Robins manager Mark Cooper made one change to the XI which started at Stevenage, with Jay McEveley replacing Dany N’Guessan, while the Town boss changed to a 3-5-2 formation as Alex Pritchard supported Nile Ranger up front.

Swindon settled into their passing game as best they could on a rutted Priestfield Stadium pitch but once again they found themselves with an uphill battle to overcome as they fell behind to Legge’s 18th-minute header.

Grant Hall lost track of the Gills defender’s run across the front of him from a free-kick and Legge produced a deadly finish to leave Foderingham helpless.

Cody McDonald spurned two excellent chances when clean through on goal, as Town’s three central defenders struggled to keep an organised line at the back, and that profligacy could have come back to bite the home side’s striker in the final minutes of the first half.

Pritchard picked out Yaser Kasim with a well-weighted centre but the Iraqi’s sidefooted shot was brilliantly saved by Stuart Nelson, low down to his left.

After the break Town showed more energy and creativity and the introduction of the lively George Barker gave the visitors more impetus going forward. It was the former Brighton man who won a free-kick that Pritchard curled at Nelson, while Massimo Luongo also tested the Gills keeper, but a breakthrough just wasn’t coming.

Foderingham at the other end had to be quick off his line to keep out McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa steered a header wide but Swindon couldn’t keep their opponents to a single goal and, with seven minutes remaining, the Gills breached the visitors’ defences again.

This time it was not so much about bad defending but intelligent forward play as Bradley Dack found Joe Martin behind enemy lines and when his cross picked out the unmarked Harriman there was only going to be one result.
