SWINDON TOWN: Luongo wants to prove doubters wrong

Swindon Advertiser: Massimo Luongo, left Massimo Luongo, left

“EVERYONE’S expecting a loss, aren’t they? So we’ve got to prove everyone wrong”.

Massimo Luongo’s got it about right. Such is Swindon Town’s form away from home this season, tonight’s trip to high-flying Walsall is not being treated with an awful lot of optimism by pundits and fans associated with the Robins.

Town haven’t tasted victory on the road since November 12 and in the six matches since the win at Colchester they have picked up just two points. Given that awful run, it’s remarkable Luongo and Town are still challenging for a play-off place but they find themselves five points off their hosts this evening, who currently occupy sixth spot.

However, Walsall have hardly been exceptional at the Banks’s Stadium this term - the Saddlers have won less than half their home games, scoring just 15 times in 13 matches - and Luongo thinks it may be the perfect opportunity for Swindon to upset the form book and lay down a statement of intent.

“They beat us here and I remember them being quite decent,” he said. “They were probably the best footballing side we’ve played. It’s up to the gaffer what we do and see what we’ve done wrong.

“Everyone’s expecting a loss, aren’t they? So we’ve got to prove everyone wrong.

“We have bad games – Stevenage and Shrewsbury away last time – at Gillingham we had a slight improvement although some players didn’t turn up. We’ve had a few players come in now as well so it might be a bit different. We might have to try something new.”

Luongo thinks a strikeforce pairing of Michael Smith and Nile Ranger could do a lot of damage in League One during the remaining 19 games of the season. Smith scored twice on his Town debut on Saturday, while Ranger came off the bench to score once and set up another as the Robins ran out 3-1 winners.

“We didn’t see much of (Smith) in training but he’s got a couple of nice goals and he’s somebody who’s going to work for the team as well. He always wants to get on the ball and help people out and that’s a good attitude,” said Luongo.

“With Nile there were two big men. They’re difficult to beat in the air and one’s going to run all game. Having them both there is a massive threat, I wouldn’t want to be a defender against them.

“Having two number nines is great. They are different. They’re both good in the air but they have different qualities and different games call for different players.”

I think he's been as blatant as he can be without actually saying the words, "I don't want Ranger". I think tonight calls for a defensive formation with only one up top anyway though. I was very impressed with Walsall at our place.

I think the walsall are the best team i have seen at the cg this season. They played us of the park. Lets hope we can play them of the park tonight.

So which one is going to run all game Mass and which one is likely to be the most influential? Hope we do play both up front, we haven't had such aerial strength in a long while. Although Ranger must be a nightmare to manage (odd given his on-field persona) I wish Mark Cooper would sometimes highlight all his positives on the pitch. Perhaps he feels he can't speak too highly of him because it might give Ranger a sense that he can get away with being late etc and cause a behaviour relapse. Hope he can keep his act together and get his footballing career back on track.

So pleased I can get to the match tonight, I reckon we can take at least a draw. COYMR

I'd like them to try 4-1-3-2 tonight with both the big lads up top. What have we got to lose? Our away form can hardly get much worse can it?

Good words from Luongo, but unfortunately we have heard similar comments before.

I want to see the talking done on the pitch. Walsall will be a very tough match so the least I expect from Swindon I to see us battle and give it a good go at them

True, will need to reserve judgement. Also spot on about giving them a game at least, even if we lose I'd like to think we'll make it hard for Walsall. The heart says a battling, well-earned score draw. We'll see what happens, COYR.

Only trouble with 4132 formation is we could easily get over run in midfield
.
The same way 4231 is effectively 433 - 4132 is effectively is a 424 as I'm guessing the 3 would contain wide players like Pritchard and Byrne
.
It could be Luongo Harley and Kasim - but that would limit our attacks down the wings and force us to be narrow
.
I personally would like us to go 532 away
.
Back 3 of Branco Ward and McEveley
.
Thompson and Bryne as wingbacks to give width as both bomb on
.
Have a defensive midfield trio of Thompson sitting an man marking
with a box to box pair in Kasim and Luongo to give protection first - then support when countering
.
Go with Ranger and Smith up top - 2 big men to hold it up and take pressure off - plus we have see both can run with ball and set others up so with 2 up they could create a goal between themselves
.
Or bring the wingbacks or the box to boxers in to the game as they break to support
.
Then we have Storey, Barker, Pritchard, Harley and Mason on the bench to go more attacking if need be
.
Defeat won't end out PO's as 18 more games to go - but a point or more will certainly keep them alive as we will still be in striking distance with a home game to follow

We could talk about formations all day long (and I'm not disagreeing with the 5-3-2 with Ranger and Smith up front, as it would probably give us the best chance of scoring and minimizing how many we concede) but from what I've seen of town on the road this season, it's often the attitude on the pitch that hasn't been right, and if we don't get that right it matters very little what the formation is - go out with the wrong attitude and we've failed before we start.

If we want it bad enough and work for it enough this evening I could see us getting a point, no question. If they step on the pitch with self doubt or don't apply themselves correctly, I can only see us getting beaten.

Up to you now boys, make us proud!

Turned over in midfield with 4-3-2? We got turned over playing 6 in the middle
Remember the good old 4-6-0?
I think your find our away form dropped when our worst manager ever took over, when cooper was part of his tactics being his number2.
I was hoping sangita shah was going to be our after I suggested a job share.

Certainly hope we go with the two big lads upfront and play the long ball from the back up to them as I'm sure they will push high up the park if we dilly dally with it at the back as they did at the CG and it could easily have been 6 or 7 and as I keep saying in many games we have created more chances for the opposition than they have themselves !
In Ranger we have one of the best number 9's in this league but imo playing him alone away from hone makes him ineffective so come on MC lets go for it , If we really want to reach the PO's this is a game we need to win not only to peg them back but to give the team some confidence on the road . Not been clever in our last 3 games and need a big improvement tonight.
Can we win this this game? yes we can as it is a very open (poor if you like ) League.
Personally i think we are not that far from having a very good team.
I know every team can say this but it is very true of us,if we had not conceded so many "gifts" of goals this season we would be in the mix..
