SWINDON Supermarine boss Dave Webb was last night making a late bid to bring in a new keeper in time for tomorrow’s visit to Shortwood in Southern League Division One South & West.

Loanee Conor Thompson has had his Torquay contract cancelled by mutual consent and therefore Marine’s chances of renewing his temporary spell have been ended.

Webb subsequently put seven-day approaches in for two different stoppers, one of which he was due to negotiate with last night regarding a switch to South Marston.

“I’ve got a couple of options that we’re exploring and we’ve got to find a keeper that’s good enough to play for the remaining 20 games,” said Webb.

“I believe that the keeper is so important to the way the outfield players play, he sets the foundation for the team.”

Dual-registered Highworth stopper Kieran Shail was last night on standby to play but while backing the keeper’s abilities, Webb is reluctant to heap pressure on the youngster.

Webb said: “In time I believe that Kieran will progress and be able to play at this level, but he has no experience so it’s a big ask for him to come in and play week after week.

“That would put a massive amount of pressure on everybody. However, if Kieran does end up playing I don’t think he would let anyone down.”

Other than his concerns between the sticks, Webb has a full squad for tomorrow’s visit to Shortwood.

Marine are currently ninth in the standings and six points off the play-off spots, while Shortwood are also on 38 points but have played a game more.

Elsewhere in the division, title-chasing Cirencester are away to another play-off-chasing outfit in the form of Paulton.

Ciren have only lost one of their last nine league games but have their work cut out to catch in-form table-toppers Merthyr.

Brian Hughes’ men are somewhat short on game time having only completed one match this year, with Saturday’s match at home to Godalming on Saturday being abandoned.

The home clash with Marine on Tuesday was postponed.
