Barker unhappy with home bow

Swindon Advertiser: George Barker George Barker

GEORGE Barker branded Swindon Town’s performance in their 1-0 home defeat to Oldham Athletic on Saturday as “unacceptable”.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion forward made his full debut and enjoyed his first run-out in front of his new club’s fans but the occasion was tainted by an abject display from the Robins, as they crashed to their first defeat at the County Ground since November 23.

Barker accepted that Town did not do themselves justice on the day and cut a frustrated figure during his post-match interviews with the local media.

“Everyone’s disappointed. Coming off the pitch, knowing that we’ve lost, no one is going to be in a good mood. The gaffer came in and, rightly so, battered us for not playing well today,” he said.

“We needed to get the ball down, pass and be patient with everything. We’re a passing team, we like to be in control of the game and for a lot of it we weren’t in control of it today and that’s where we went wrong.

“For a team like Swindon, we’re really successful at home and we do try and play and get in the right areas to play. When we can’t play we go long and I think it’s our own fault today.

“I’d have liked to have a few more touches than I did out there today but I’m still learning. It’s a bit frustrating not to get the ball as much as I would have liked but that was the game today.

“I’ve only been here a few weeks but, from what I’ve seen of the last few games and in training, all the boys work as hard as they can to get things right. The gaffer sets out the way he wants to play in training every day and everyone knows exactly how he wants us to play. We’re doing our best but today, from me as well as everyone else, it wasn’t acceptable.

“I’m happy the gaffer picked me but I don’t like losing games and the fashion we did today was really not good enough.”

Swindon visit Peterborough United for a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern section area final first leg tie on Wednesday night and Barker stressed how crucial it is for the Robins to banish the memories of the weekend’s events ahead of the trip.

“It’s a big game on Wednesday and the boys have just got to put it behind us and go again,” he said. Wednesday is an important game for us and hopefully we can get a result there.”

Barkers was one of the worst performances. He was almost anonymous. Maybe that was because of where he was played out wide. I'd like to see him through the middle playing off a target man. That said it was up to him to get into the game.

Everyone saw he put in a poor performance, he knows that wasn't good enough. Here's hoping that was down to nerves and he shows more next time. He showed a few glimpses in the Stevenage away game.

Our midfield was woeful on Saturday, Barker did nothing of any note and based on that performance looks like a very poor signing, Byrne could not get past his man and any attempted crosses from him were pitiful. Louis Thompson ran around like a headless chicken and Hartley might as well not been on the field, he created absolutely nothing and the less said about his free kick attempts the better. Luango was only slightly better and the decision of Cooper to take him off, for Gladwin who added nothing to changing the game was baffling, in fact although he wasn't at fault for the goal, we actually went behind with his arrival. It was also baffling with Byrne playing so poor how he wasn't the one to make way, why was he not subbed when we had Reis on the bench only Cooper can answer. who although he might be short of game time is a natural winger and with our two big ones up front we ere crying out for a winger that could actually get past his defender and centre a decent ball.

First game played with no Spurs players and to be honest if this is the best team we could field it is very worrying because they were absolutely clueless, worst performance I've seen from a town side since the days of Danny Wilson's non-triers and we all know where that led to.

You have to be able to control a ball and his forst three touches he didnt. Wasnt impressed with what i saw of Barker looking like a little boy lost and we seemed to be playing with 10 men for a long period with him on the pitch.
Sorry but your not ready yry for the first tema harsh i know but those are the facts and nor is the lad from Marlow ready for first team action both out of their depth. We plated straight into Oldhams hands. Looking at the last four five games Gillingham, Stevenage,Oldham we lost to really poor side, beat a poor side in Shreswbury but very lucky to win and drew with Walsall. We are playing poorly and have done in all these games no pattern, not enough desire and committment from these players.
Are too many including Cooper looking forward more to the JPT.

Why do we play with a forward on the left wing every game?

Maybe because Cooper doesn't have the balls to admit that we play 4-5-1 at home.

Ranger love him or hate him. We play his wages. Should start every game.

Agree with all above Barker just looked lost , Byrne could'nt cross and hit the target , I fear we are witnessig another Cooper Darlington season gambling all on getfing us to Wembley and if he does he will put the season down as a success and it wil be but he should not be scarificing the league to achieve it , who in there right mind takes a captain off at half time ? especially when he was having one of his better games . I was also watching the body language , not once does Copper call them overfor water and tak to them and all his shouting on the line I don't think he players looked at him once , basically they appear to take no notice of him at all

Yes Barker had a poor game but in all honesty the team was very poor but I don't feel he is ready for a full game yet and I would play Storey ahead of him every time . Also the LB Reckford don't fill me with any confidence should have had Byrne back there while JM is out . TAH was the only bright spark for me at least he put in the effort .
Didn't think we would make PO with our away form and we are now starting to struggle at home performance wise and we have some very hard games to come at the CG . Teams have now sussed us out and put us under pressure in our half , if only we had a Matt Ritchie who could supply our two big lads with quality crosses , yes AP is a good player but he likes to cut inside so the big lads are getting very few crosses into the box . Still the season has been better than many thought it would be COYR

I'd of shunted Byrne to left back and taken off Reckord who was a disaster again, early days i know but he was poor.

Agree on the Luongo sub, he is or rather was our only creative midfielder on the day and not actually sure if Gladwin offered anything defensively or offensively. In defence of Louis T, at least he ran round and threw himself into tackles and passed the ball.

Harley was poor, again, and not sure what he actually does. My lad can take a better set piece and he's 9!

Team selection, tactics, as well as performance, will bee crucial on Wednesday and need to get a result there, and score as well as i think away goals will count won't they?

Away goals only count double outside domestic competitions, but getting a result will still be crucial, as can't see us being able to come back at home from a heavy defeat even at home.
