IT MIGHT seem old-fashioned, but working together and having fun are the core values behind Nalgo Putting Club.

In these days when the win-at-all-costs attitude is an integral part of sport at most levels, this club’s ethos may appear unfamiliar, even quaint.

But for secretary Steve Sell, the simple and straightforward pleasure of gentle competitiveness and a thorough socialising session afterwards are just what should attract the public.

The club runs a two-division league and various cup competitions with the season taking place from March until September, with new members being sought to expand the current 14-team structure.

And Sell feels there are plenty of benefits to joining the only putting league in the south of England.

He said: “We want to get people playing sport rather than being in gangs on the street or sitting indoors watching telly. We want to get people together and get them to play as a team.

“It’s not serious stuff, it’s just a bit of fun. It’s getting people to communicate together, but it’s more than just putting, people can meet and greet in the club afterwards.

“Games last for half an hour but you can go indoors and have a drink for a couple of hours afterwards, it’s good stuff.”

Two 18-hole courses are currently in place for members, who join the Nalgo Club for £12 a year with each team subsequently paying £70 to join the league.

Each match comprises six players and two substitutes, with the playing format being six singles matches and three doubles matches.

“We’ve had two new teams enter this year so that puts us up to 14 teams across two divisions of seven,” continued Sell, the father of Wrag Barn professional Martin Sell.

“If we could get another couple of teams in that would be just right. That would fill the whole league virtually every week.

“We’ve got 20 or 21 weeks of the season before it gets too dark to play and if the teams play each other twice then that’s only 12 games, although we’ve added a couple more cup competitions in to start the season.

“It’s midweek so it doesn’t muck people’s weekends up and we set up fixtures on days that suit the teams.

“We haven’t got a junior league but we’re trying to start something like that and we’ve got an individual Sunday League which we started last year.”
