Bassett head coach happy with progress

Swindon Advertiser: Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low

WOOTTON Bassett’s head coach Alan Low is happy with the progress his side have made this season.

Back in October, Low’s team went to Saturday’s visitors, Milton Keynes, and conceded nearly 50 points in Southern Counties North but he was keen to stress the advances his team have made since.

“I’ve been with the club half a season and we’ve been growing, even since that game,” said Low.

“We went down to Milton Keynes with a number of people missing, and played some good rugby. We scored probably our best try this season in that game.

“We’ve come on a lot since since then. Instead of playing in good spells for 15-20 minutes, we’re now playing well for 60 minutes spells.”

“I’m happy with where we are and how far we’ve come on from the pre-season games when I took over. We’re playing a different style of rugby and the boys buying into it.”

Low is hoping a strong crowd will turn out on the club’s Vice President lunch day.

“The guys are champing at the bit,” he said. “We had a blip against Stow but if we get the performance right we’ll bounce back.”

Bassett will be without injured captain Tim Gallimore and fly-half Duncan Fulling.

Elsewhere, Swindon College Old Boys Chairman Martin Peaple is not confident his side’s game with Alchester will survive the rain.

“It was wet when we played the second-team game and there’s not been a break in the weather since, I think anybody will be lucky to play this weekend,” Peaple told the Advertiser.

Alchester are just a place ahead of bottom side Old Boys and Peaple is confident his side can get a result if the game goes ahead.

“We’ve got the same team we had in the close to games against Thatcham and Milton Keynes,” he said.

“Charlie Grabe and Toby Haines are available, they would be boosting the first team.“
