JONNY May has turned down the offer of a protective mask as he prepares to make his second Six Nations appearance against Scotland today.

The former Wootton Bassett youngster lasted only six minutes of his debut in the competition after being forced off with a broken nose against France last weekend, but has kept hold of his place in the England team for today’s match at Murrayfield.

May was cleared to play, despite the break to his nose, after a specialist confirmed there was no damage to either his cheek or his eye socket and has been involved in full contact sessions all week ahead of the Calcutta Cup match.

“I remember calling not to get the ball as I had two men on me but Faz (Owen Farrell) obviously thought I was calling for it,” May said.

“So, I carried it in to what was a messy ruck, from which we won a penalty, but Browny (Mike Brown) came straight in and kneed me on the nose.

"I have broken my nose in the past, had a few knocks on it recently, so it was almost waiting to go.

"It wasn’t that painful but there was a lot of blood and concerns about the eye socket.

“The nose is sore most of the time. It gets hit in most games.

"It was frustrating but I have a tried to see it in a positive light.

"I wasn’t fazed by the experience and the way the game opened up, there would have been opportunities. That is what I want to build on now.”

England head coach Stuart Lancaster expects May to carry on as if the injury had never happened when the game kicks off today.

“Jonny was so alive and had so much belief going into the game which turned out to be one that would have suited his talent,” he said.
