GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL: Intel into Junior KO Cup final

First published in Sport by

TWO second-half goals saw Intel into the final of the Wiltshire League Junior KO Cup after they overcame Sarum in blustery conditions at Commonweal.

Mark Allen’s men will now face either Malmesbury reserves or Melksham reserves after goals from Louis Wollen and Craig Roberts earned them a 2-0 win.

Both goals came in the closing stages, with Wollen converting a penalty following a handball while Roberts diverted in a Wollen cross to make the game safe.

As manager Allen explained, it was a hard-earned victory in conditions more conducive to kite-flying than passing football.

“We could definitely feel the wind when we were doing the pitch inspection and we knew it wasn’t going to be a pretty game, and that’s how it turned out,” he said.

“The ball was flying into the air from goal kicks, stopping and going backwards, but the two teams tried their best to play some football and we did in parts.

“We weren’t very good in the first half and we had the wind with us, but it was so strong that it actually limited our play. We had three good chances but didn’t put any of them away.

“In the second half we were going into the wind and played much better, although I think Sarum would probably be aggrieved about the two goals.

“The penalty was one you’re grateful for if you receive it and with the second one he knocked in with his midriff, so there was possibly a shout for handball.”

Malmesbury and Melksham have yet to play the other semi with the tie scheduled to go ahead on Saturday, February 22.

Intel have already met Malmesbury four times this season, with the two most recent encounters ending 6-5 in the former team’s favour.

Allen added: “It would be amazing to play Malmesbury in the final as we’ve got a bit of a thing going with them this season.

“If we got Melksham in the final then we would give it a good crack.
