WALCOT boxer Patrick McDonagh takes another step on the championship trial today when he contests the Youth Championships semi-final in Portsmouth.

The 17-year-old encounters London and Eastern Counties champion Danny Barrett from the Hooks Boxing Club in London.

The former England Schoolboy international has already won a national title this season, having emerged victorious from the Youth Ambition Championships in November.

McDonagh said ahead of the bout: “I only boxed the quarter-final last Sunday so I haven’t had long to prepare in between but I am happy with my form and I am enjoying the longer distance of the three minute rounds.

“I feel confident I can do well on Saturday.”

McDonagh’s coach Harry Scott added: “Patrick is facing a tough opponent on Saturday, but on his day he is a match for any boxer in the country.

“He has adapted to the new three minute rounds very well, as his fitness and conditioning is always good. Everyone at Walcot wishes him well, and we hope he can make another national final.”

Boxing starts at 12.30pm at the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy, Charter Sports Centre, Portsmouth.
