SEAN MIllwaters has hailed the try-scoring power of winger Matty Dickens but insisted his Supermarine side are much more than a one-man band.

Dickens has crossed the whitewash consistently all season for Marine to lead their scoring charts, along with kicker Stu Dawson, to put the South Marston club right in the hunt for promotion from Dorset & Wilts 1 North.

Despite quickly praising his player, Millwaters was also keen to stress the amount of tries Dickens has been able to score was a direct result of impressive work from the players around him.

“Matt has a really good knack of scoring important tries but your top try scorer is only ever as good as the players around him,” he said.

“Yeah, he’s scored some pretty good 60 or 70-metre tries but he’s also been on the end of a lot of good team moves.

“Against Fairford, Stu (Dawson) put a really good cross-field kick in and Matty’s pace took him in front of their defender and we got the score.

“It’s the team around him who give him all the chances to score because if he went out there on his own and played against 15 players it wouldn’t be pretty.

“I wouldn’t bet against him scoring one though as long as he didn’t have to kick off.”

Millwaters himself has been playing at scrum-half recently and has enjoyed his resurgence having previously retired on numerous occasions.

“I’ve been playing at nine recently and it’s been good,” he said. “I keep retiring but I always end up playing again.

“A lot of clubs in the area seem to be a little thin on the ground in certain positions and props and half-backs seem to be like gold dust really.

“Every team has a good number of back row and centres but when you start looking at the front row and half-backs they seem a little more scared.

“This year we converted our number eight to a tight head prop and Dai Wilson has been having a wonderful season, so it can be done.”

Marine are without a game this weekend but return action against Chippenham 2nds on March 1.
