PREDICTIONS LEAGUE: Swindon Town v Crawley Town

A very Happy New Year to everyone.

Well that’s what it should have been when this fixture was originally scheduled to take place. The New Year ’s Day fixture succumbed to the weather just 45 minutes AFTER I had bought my ticket. I was just making my flask of coffee when Wiltshire Radio announced that the game was off. Should have listened to the misses, she said at 8 O’clock I wouldn’t be going. She had other ideas though, a trip around the Sales with my wallet. So, on that rain soaked day, neither got what we wanted, as I added a tot of JD to the contents of my half time beverage and put my feet up.

I said back then that with 23 matches to go, statistically we would end the season with approximately 68 points and finish just outside the play-offs. Now, with 14 games of the season left, according to the projected stats, we will still fall short of the play-offs. It is looking likely that we will only gain a total of 65 points for the season and whilst that should see us finish comfortably within the top 10, it will not be good enough for that elusive 6th place.

Based on last season we finished 6th with 74 points. To do the same this season we need at least another 30 points. So just 10 more wins should do it. We do have the comfort of 8 home games which we could reap 18 to 20 points. Although 4 of those games are against Wolves, Preston, Bradford and Rotherham, all of whom will also be battling for points. It could be that the last game against the Dons could be a 6th place decider. We will also need to get at least 10 points from our remaining away fixtures. Yet with trips to Crewe, Bristol City, Tranmere and Notts County, who will be strapping for every crumb as they try to avoid relegation.

30 points from a possible 42? Whilst it is mathematically possible, it is still a tall order. It will need every squad player to step up to the plate and give of his all. It’s time to cut out the defensive errors, which must have cost us somewhere in the region of 20 points already.

Teams around us will drop points. We just need to believe.

Believe that the impossible is possible.
