SWINDON’S boxing community delivered the knockout blows at last night’s Advertiser Sport Awards at the Four Pillars Hotel, walking away with three of the 11 gongs.

Kelvin Young was named the Sportsman of the Year after a stellar 2013 as he claimed two titles.

The Penhill brawler won the Southern Area super-middleweight title in September before going on to claim a unanimous points decision over Bulgarian Alexey Ribchev at the Oasis Leisure Centre to take the IBO Inter-Continental belt.

His manager and promoter Keith Mayo was crowned the Sports Personality of the Year having played a major role in getting more and more Swindonians interested in boxing, with his unmistakably gruff lilt and passion for the sport.

Mayo said: “I’m absolutely gobsmacked. Just to be nominated was flattering enough and to win this prestigious award is a massive honour for me.

“At the end of the day I’m just a massive boxing fan. It is my passion and I’m so grateful to be in a position to have brought professional boxing back to the town.

“I’d just like to thank the whole team down at the Horseshoe Gym and of course everyone who voted for me.”

Meanwhile, Jordan O’Donoghue was named the Young Sportswoman of the Year.

The Walcot boxer started the year in style with victory in the Golden Girls tournament in Sweden before winning a succession of impressive bouts after returning to home soil.

The youngster completed an excellent season with a victory over schoolgirl champion Niamh McGuckin on a Horseshow ABC event.

It was also a special night for the family of the late Dave Turner as they collected a special recognition award for the former Shrivenham manager following his sudden and tragic death earlier this month.

Swimmer Jazz Carlin was crowned the Sportswoman of the Year after she won triple gold at the British Gas International Meet, she followed it up with her first-ever British Championship titles as she triumphed in the 400m, 800m and 1500m in Sheffield.

Broome Manor pro David Howell’s dramatic play-off victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews earned the Performance of the Year gong, with his father Ray picking up the award as he is currently playing in South Africa.

Mr Swindon Town Ladies, Roger Reeves won the Unsung Hero award, having played a major role in the development of Swindon Town Ladies over the past 20 years.

Cricketer Jake Goodwin was named Young Sportsman of the Year, while swimming club Swindon Dolphin were crowned Team of the Year.

Wrag Barn Golf Club picked up two awards, their junior section winning the Young Team of the Year award and Richard Ward the Coach of the Year prize.

Ernie Howell was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award.
