MICHAEL Smith was happy to silence his biggest critic – his own dad – after scoring his first goal since January 28 during Swindon Town’s 2-1 home defeat to MK Dons on Saturday.

Though disappointed with the result, Smith was pleased to have found the back of the net with an 18th-minute header – his fourth goal for Town since arriving from Charlton Athletic at the turn of the year.

And he revealed to the Advertiser that during his mini goal drought he had endured the taunts of his nearest and dearest.

“There’s always a bit of banter flying about but most of it from my own dad, he’s the worst. I’m confident in my own abilities and if I’m in the right positions I’ll score,” he said.

“My dad, my brother, a few of my mates back home – everyone has been on at us but I just laugh and keep working hard. I’ll be straight on the phone to them, don’t worry.

“You just keep plugging away, keep working hard in training. I know I can score goals, I know if I get in the right positions I’ll put the ball away.

“I’ll take them all day. It’s been a while without a goal, I’m just glad to be back on the scoresheet.”

Wolves visit the County Ground tonight off the back of a run of eight straight victories but Smith is not daunted by the prospect and is relishing the chance to right the wrongs of the weekend so quickly.

“You just want to forget about games like today and move on as quickly as possible, and with the game on Tuesday it’s a good opportunity to do so,” he said. “We’re just trying to focus on us and get better as a team. With the game being on Tuesday and so close it’s ideal.

“If we can take something from them it will be a big scalp for us. We’ll be ready for it.”
