Shrivenham player-manager Sam Collier is hoping a new strike duo can help change his side’s fortunes against Wantage on Saturday.

Since Collier took the reigns at Barrington Park a month ago following Dave Turner’s sad and untimely death Shrivvy have failed to win a game.

In that time Shrivenham have only scored once and that was three games ago, in Collier’s first game against Wantage.

Collier’s side are currently fifth-bottom of the Hellenic Premier and only above Newbury and Holyport on goal difference.

Evidently it has not been the easiest start for Collier in the early period of his managerial career. He would have preferred a more straightforward beginning but he’s looking to new signing Matty Bennett and returning hot-shot Josh Fowler to provide the goals to move Shrivenham up the table.

“We’ve played Wantage who are third twice already and Highmoor who are second. It would have been nice to have a couple of easier games, that said you have to play everyone at some point,” said Collier.

“(This Saturday) Matty Bennett from Highworth will be making his debut and Josh Fowler is back from his ban. Josh was suspended for four games and hasn’t played since December so he is like a new signing.

“Goals win games, it’s probably what we’ve lacked since I took over. We’ve been solid at the back but having a player (Fowler) who’s got goals back in the side is a boost. Matty and Josh just offer something different to myself and Steve Robertson.”

Collier is looking up the table not down and has faith in players to turn their form around. That starts with Wantage on Saturday, a team Shrivenham and Collier know well having played them twice in the last month.

“I’ve got no concerns about relegation, we’ve got a good bunch of lads here and back ourselves to push up the league.

“Looking at the games we’ve got we’ve got to start picking up points but I have confidence that we can do it.

“This is the third time we’ve played them (Wantage) since I’ve taken over, my first game was against them in the league, which probably the best performance we’ve had since I took over, even though they did nick it in the 80th minute.

“When we played them away we changed it a bit and that seemed to work so we’ll try and frustrate them again.”

Selection-wise for Shrivenham Dave Coleman is a doubt with an eye-infection and Nathan Blackman is missing with a knock he picked up midweek.
