Skipper's last-gasp kick secures Swindon win
SWINDON captain Adam Westall said his team were in a state of disbelief after their dramatic comeback win at Buckingham.
The Wiltshire side had been dominated for 60 minutes of the game and were 32-5 down when they turned on the style to overhaul their hosts for an unlikely victory.
Add to that the fact that with 30 seconds remaining the Greenbridge Road side were still trailing by a converted score and the feat becomes even more impressive.
Westall, who had to kick the game-winning conversion, said he had never experienced anything like it.
“I’ve been involved in rugby at a national level for 16 years but I’ve never been involved in a turnaround like that, it’s certainly one to savour,” he said.
“There was a bit of disbelief at the end as we all knew how poor we had been.
“There weren’t many of us celebrating at the final whistle, a win is a win, which is some thing we’ve said a bit too much this season to be honest.
Playing into a strong wind in the first half Swindon, did not get out the blocks at all and struggled for fluency against a Buckingham side fighting relegation.
With only Dave Cox’s first-half try on the board and trailing by 27 points with just over 20 minutes remaining, no one would have backed a Swindon side - whose form has been inconsistent - to get the win.
Through a rapid spate of tries from Gary Williamson, Alex Fenton, Oliver Newton and Kevin Gough, Swindon were able to give Westall the platform to steal the win. Of the game-winning kick the captain said he relied on his experience to ignore outside pressure and get it over.
If Swindon can take one thing from a mostly poor performance it is the ability they have within their ranks, a point Westall was keen to make.
“They must be gutted,” added Westall. “It shows how much talent we’ve got in the squad to be able to play with precision and skill in the end.
“Every team in the league has that card in their pack once a season and we pulled it on Saturday, that said there’s not many other teams who could have the talent to execute the way we did.”
