Fewer trial games as Town search for rough diamonds
UNLIKE 12 months ago, Swindon Town will not be holding trial matches for rafts of potential new signings over the coming weeks, with a target list for the summer already identified.
Last year, former manager Kevin MacDonald watched over several games featuring dozens of trialists as he scouted possible acquisitions for the club during a period of transition.
This time around, however, current boss Mark Cooper will not be put through the same process, after he and owner Lee Power established exactly who they will be pursuing during the off-season.
However, Cooper is keen to arrange a handful of development games to give those out-of-contract players one last chance to impress before decisions are made on their futures.
He told the Advertiser: “We’re trying to get a couple of development games, not so much trial games. We’ve got a list of players we’re going to try to work through, in terms of recruitment. There are obviously the boys who are out of contract that we need to deal with as well.
“Development games will be needed for the boys who haven’t played. Grant Hall will be back sometime this week and he’ll need a development game and it’s important that we have those.
“It was very different last year.”
