Foderingham in ‘best form of the season’ says Cooper

Swindon Advertiser: Town 'keeper Wes Foderingham Town 'keeper Wes Foderingham

SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper thinks goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is in the best form of his season so far.

Foderingham, who has conceded just one goal in 270 minutes of action since returning to the Town side a fortnight ago following a groin injury, has in Cooper’s eyes significantly improved his distribution from the back and command of his penalty area over the course of the campaign.

And the Swindon boss was quick to praise the 23-year-old, and goalkeeping coach Fraser Digby, in his pre-match press conference ahead of today’s visit of Sheffield United to the County Ground.

“I think Wes is now starting to come for a lot more crosses and showing what a really good goalkeeper he is.

“It gives the opposition a problem, when you squeeze up the pitch, that it’s not as big for them.

“There’s not much room to play in,” he said.

“I think he’s been outstanding. He’s come and taken crosses and vastly improved playing out from the back.

“You can see why people were looking at him.

“Fraser has done a lot of work with him in terms of bossing his area and coming for crosses a lot more and you can see the benefits of that from the last few games.”

The Blades arrive in Wiltshire this afternoon off the back of a run of just one defeat in their last 10 league games and will provide a formidable test for Cooper’s men, who themselves are unbeaten in three.

“It is important that we have a strong finish to the end of the season, for various reasons.

“We have to give the fans some optimism for next year and the players have to show they’re worth being part of what we’re trying to do as well,” said the Swindon manager.

His return to his top form, could have something to do with having more confidence with the two or 3 centre backs in front of him. Also Belford showing what he can do will keep him on his toes.

I'm not sure he's ever had a bad patch of form. Getting stroppy at Preston was his only blip.

I think it's because he's not a giant that he's not already playing higher up. He'll be off in the summer.

He'd gone off the boil a bit after losing Doardo's coaching. Seems to be back to his best now. Our best keeper in my lifetime by some distance - and I speak as someone with fond memories of Downsborough and Digby. Sadly I imagine he will have to go in the summer if we have serious intentions of buying the players needed for a promotion push.

He has done well lately but I still don't think he's been the same as when the Italian was working with him. No question Digby was a top goalkeeper for the club but not sure about his coaching credentials. I think perhaps Belford doing well has simply perked him up

Agree with that and also fear he will be gone soon. Deserves to play at Championship level at least but hope he doesn't move just to become a bench warmer in the Premiership.

Best option would be for him to stay with us when we secure promotion via the play-offs in May!
