SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Late goal dents Ciren's title hopes

CIRENCESTER Town’s hopes of lifting the Southern League Division One South and West title took another blow as they crashed to an injury-time winner at Didcot Town.

The Centurions went into the match trailing leaders Merthyr Town by seven points, but this loss coupled with the Welsh side’s 2-2 draw at Godalming Town, has left Brian Hughes’ outfit with a lot of work to do.

It started brightly enough for the Corinium Stadium side as Steve Davies fired the visitors into the lead in the 17th minute.

However, the Railwaymen drew level six minutes later through John Mills and that was score at the interval.

Cirencester regained the lead on 53 minutes when Davies bagged his second of the match giving the visitors hope that they could go on and claim victory.

But Didcot had other ideas and scored twice in the final seven minutes to ensure that the three points remained in Oxfordshire.

Matt Woodley grabbed the hosts equaliser in the 83rd minute and then Cirencester’s hearts were broken in injury when Luke Carnell slammed home the winner.

The defeat at Didcot now stretches the Centurions winless run to five matches and they have now lost their last two outings to injury-time strikes.

Cirencester remain in second-place, however, Devon side Tiverton Town, who beat them 1-0 on Thursday night, are hot on their heels in third, trailing Hughes’ outfit by just four points and with two games in hand.
