Cox keen to earn a new deal at STFC
LEE Cox is keen to earn a new deal at Swindon Town after making his first start in a Robins shirt for more than two years on Saturday.
The midfielder was named by manager Mark Cooper in the starting line-up for the weekend win over Sheffield United fully 25 months after featuring from the off against Shrewsbury Town in a League Two match on February 21, 2012.
He produced a dogged performance and now hopes that Town are able to offer him an extended contract when his current stay in Wiltshire expires this summer.
When asked if he’d want to renew terms at the County Ground, Cox said: “Definitely. It’s a big club, I don’t think anyone could turn down any deal at this club. It’s a great club and we’ll just have to see what I can do in the future.”
No negotiations have yet begun, however, with Cox saying: “Nothing so far. I’m just keeping my head dowe like I have done all season and hopefully getting some more gametime.
“It’s a great set of lads to be working with, there’s a lot of talent at this club. You learn off each other every day. I’ve certainly learnt a lot in training off the gaffer and Luke. It’s been good.”
Given the length of time between starts, the former Inverness man was delighted to be included by Cooper.
He said: “I was raring to go. I haven’t started a competitive match since last April so it was good. I think I’ve had it embedded from an early age that I work hard no matter what and I keep going. Luckily it’s kept my fitness up.
“I thought first half we controlled the game. In the second half we got a bit sloppy and that cost us. We had to do more running.
“It was a good buzz at the end to see Louis (Thompson, who scored the winning goal)”.
