SWINDON SUNDAY LEAGUE: Greyhound hanging onto Gas

GREYHOUND FC managed to hang on to both a win and AFC Gas’s coattails on Saturday with their 1-0 success against New Century WMC.

Gas remain one point above Greyhound after their 7-2 mauling of The Dolphin and have a game in hand, but Greyhound are hoping and poised for any slip-up from the leaders.

Greyhound boss Dave Hawkins think the title is Gas’s to lose but was pleased with his side’s gritty win at Penhill Recreation Ground.

“All we can do is keep making it difficult for them and put pressure on them,” said Hawkins.

“We’ve got to rely on others, it’s not in our hands as such but we’ll keep going.”

In a game where chances were few and far between, Dave Slattery’s tap-in after the New Century keeper had spilt 16-year-old Ollie Hunt’s fierce shot proved the difference.

Greyhound shaded the first half and did enough to get their goal. New Century dominated possesion in the second period but created relatively few chances as Greyhound’s defence stood firm.

Hawkins was delighted with his side’s defensive show.

“They tried to push and we defended ever so well as a team. They had no clear-cut chances, they camped out for the last 10 minutes but didn’t create anything.

“They didn’t miss any chances because they didn’t get any, a lot of that was down to our defensive for resolve.”

The two sides have a friendly rivalry, enough to give Greyhound’s a little edge to their post-match joy.

“It’s always nice (to beat them),” said Hawkins, “We’ve beat them twice this year, that’s probably the first time we’ve done that in a long time. There’s a lot of friends and family, on either side so it’s nice to get the bragging rights.”

Elsewhere in Division One, Wheatsheaf FC put some distance between themselves and bottom side Penhill United with a 6-1 win. The result puts Penhill 10 points behind Wheatsheaf and leaves their goal difference at a miserable minus 48.
