HOCKEY: Wootton Bassett's Barnes brings up his century
5:30am Thursday 3rd April 2014 in Sport
PROLIFIC talisman Kyle Barnes reached a grand total of 101 goals in all competitions for the season after adding six to his tally in Wootton Bassett’s 11-1 thrashing of City of Bath C in Davis Wood East Central 1.
With the league title already secured, Bassett rounded off their campaign in emphatic fashion, claiming their 21st victory from 22 outings.
The first goal of the match arrived in the 15th minute when Ali Sammon played in Barnes before the same two players combined to add Barnes’ second. Mark Turner contributed the third, firing the ball home off the inside of the post. Barnes added his third and fourth before half-time to send Bassett five up at the break.
At the start of the second half Barnes notched his fifth of the day and his century for the season to send Bassett out of sight, before Turner and Daniell added another two quick strikes.
Sammon nipped in at the front post to score the home side’s 200th league goal this season and, though Bath pulled one back midway through the half, Barnes fired home his sixth of the match and Bassett ended the season with a convincing victory.
Meanwhile, Wootton Bassett Ladies travelled to Herefordshire to take on a Leominster team they had never beaten away from home in West Clubs North Division.
Bassett produced a stunning team performance to win 2-1 and leapfrog Leominster to finish the league in fourth position.
After the teams went into half time with the score level at 0-0, Bassett struck first blood early in the second period.
Tegan Buchanan started the scoring, dispatching a short corner to give the visitors the lead. Shortly after, Helen Wright released Emma Collison, whose decisive run to the back line caused panic in the Leominster defence. Collison crossed the ball in hard and it hit a defender's stick before bouncing into the goal.
A late consolation from Leominster took the score to 2-1 but the result was enough to see Bassett take fourth spot in the league.
Elsewhere, Bassett men’s B side lost 4-0 to North Wilts A in Davis Wood East Central 2 despite a player-of-the match performance from Andy Cooper.
