SWINDON’s David Howell is currently taking part in a new event on the European Tour in Cadiz.
The Broome Manor pro teed off this morning at 8.40am UK time looking to improve on his 60th place finish last time out in Morrocco.
Howell’s joined on his first round by the two tournament favourites Bernd Wiesberger and Cadiz local Alejandro Canizares.
Howell will do well to follow Canizares’ lead. The Spaniard was the winner at the last tournament Howell entered, the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco, where Canizares shot 19-under-par, 22 ahead of the two-time Ryder Cup winner.
The wind at the Reserva de Sotogrande Club de Golf course can be a critical factor, a change in direction significantly alters how the course is played.
Howell and the rest of the field will be hoping the wind is not westerly, which supposedly provides the tougher test out on the course.
Howell’s best result this year was at his tied 15th place finish at Tshwane Open in South Africa, where he overcame a back problem to card an eight-under-par for the tournament.
The 38-year-old will be hoping for a similar finish in the Spanish event that is missing some the golf’s big names ahead next week’s Masters.
