SWINDON swimmer Tilly Gray was not at her best in final of the 100m butterfly at the British Swimming Championships last night in Glasgow.

The University of Bath trained swimmer finished in last place with a time of 59.80, over a second behind suprise winner Rachael Kelly and second-placed Siobhan-Marie O’Connor.

The race was billed as a straight battle between O’Connor, who pipped Swindon’s Jazz Carlin in the 200m freestyle last night, and Great Britain star Francesca Halsall but Kelly produced a 31.21 second 50 metres to surge from third to first and take the win.

For Gray the race represents a missed opportunity as it was a good chance to lay down a qualification time in that discipline for this summer’s Commonwealth Games - which are being held at the same Glasgow venue.

Gray has already qualified for the Games in the 200m butterfly, a feat she achieved when winning at the US Open in August last year.

Swindon interests at the Championships is by no means over though. Today it is the turn of the area’s men to take centre-stage as both Grant Turner and Craig Harris make their first appearance of the meet.

Turner kicks off his bid for the 100m freestyle this morning and will hopefully sail through into the semi-finals in this evening’s session, with the final taking place tomorrow night.

Turner is hoping to get a qualification time for what would be his second Commonwealth Games, having picked up a silver medal in the 4x100m at the Delhi edition four years ago.

Former Swindon Dolphin Harris also starts out this morning in the S14 200m freestyle. Harris recently broke the British shortcourse record in the event and is looking to clock the 2:02.77 time to join Carlin, Gray and hopefully Turner at the games in Glasgow this July.
