FOURTH Division Faringdon Town A were stunned by a comeback from lower-league opponents Wallingford Town reserves in the North Berks League Cup final.

Faringdon took the lead early in the piece. Their strike duo Christian and Dominic Wills had been causing their opponents’ backline problems with their lively movement. A clumsy challenge in the Wallingford box gave Christian Wills the chance to score from the spot. It was an opportunity that Wills took with aplomb, driving the ball into the top corner.

Rather than crumble at falling a goal down to a team in the league above, Wallingford’s resolve stiffened. The Yellows began to play with more composure and created a number of chances in the remainder of the opening period, Martin Dawson and Carl Fisher both going close.

Wallingford had to wait until the second half to level the game up, Dawson creating the chance from the right, crossing for captain Charlie Lee to score.

Dawson caused the Faringdon defence problems all game and he came close to creating a second for his team, gliding past a couple of defenders to find Paul Powell in space but Powell blazed his shot high over the bar.

Dawson was not be denied and it was little surprise that it was he who created his side’s winner. The winger’s corner was not dealt with by Faringdon and Barry Primmer was on hand to head home powerfully.

Despite plenty of Faringdon pressure as they chased the game it was Wallingford who had the best chance to add to the score.

Dawson again jinked through to set up Luke Higgins but he shot tamely wide. After that neither side was able to add to the score.

This left Wallingford captain Lee with just the duty of lifting the cup for his team.
