JAZZ Carlin finished her British Championship campaign in style by convincingly retaining her 400m freestyle title in Glasgow.

The Swindon ace led from start to finish as she beat second-placed Aimee Willmott by over four seconds although her time of 4:04.68 was just outside the Welsh record.

Her success completed a superb British Championships for the Swindon Tigersharks swimmer who won gold in the 800m free and silver in the 200m free earlier in the week.

Speaking after winning gold and retaining her 400m title, Carlin admitted it was an emotional race because it marked the end of coach Bud McAllister’s coaching role in the UK.

McAllister will now take up a coaching role in Australia and Carlin was delighted to sign off with a win and dedicated her performance to her departing coach.

“It was a bit sad in a way because it was the last time my coach is coaching in the UK,” said Carlin.

“It was just a nice way to thank him for all the hard work.”

Carlin, who broke the Welsh 800m freestyle record on Monday night, admitted her British Championship campaign had been tiring.

“It was a tough race after the 800m yesterday,” she added.

“I just wanted to go out and give it the best I could.

“It is difficult being a six-day meeting and my events are towards the end of the week.

“I just had to stay focused for my main events.”

Swindon-born swimmer Hannah Miley was also in the same final, finishing fourth.
