DARTS: Swindon's McCarthy plays key role for England

Swindon Advertiser: Josh McCarthy Josh McCarthy

SWINDON darts star Josh McCarthy was one of the star performers at the British Internationals earlier this month.

McCarthy came away from the championships held in Halifax with an unblemished record as he helped England Youth win both their matches against Wales and Scotland respectively.

In his first match, the 17-year-old produced a stunning comeback to beat Scotland’s Sean Russell, who had raced into a 2-0 lead.

McCarthy’s comeback began in leg three when he hit four tons as he checked out on 106.

The Swindon thrower failed to hit a ton in the fourth leg but did enough to check out with double 10.

Russell started the decisive fifth leg in style, hitting a 129 while McCarthy managed just 45.

But when Russell managed just 24 from his next three darts, McCarthy took full advantage hitting a 140.

McCarthy followed that score with another ton before checking out on 62 to clinch victory.

It was a more straight forward success for McCarthy against Wales, as the former English Youth Masters champion strolled to a 3-0 win.

Steady scoring in the opening leg saw McCarthy clinch the first leg against James Kynaston as he checked out on double top.

A 140 in his first visit in the second leg put him in control while another ton helped him to a two-leg lead as he again checked out on double top.

McCarthy wrapped up the win and a successful weekend with three tons, including another 140, as he whitewashed his Welsh counterpart.

The Swindon youngster’s efforts helped England see off Scotland 3-1 and Wales 4-0.
