JOHN Fisher admitted that his team deserved nothing as “the herberts up the road” Shrivenham put Highworth Town in their place.

The Worthians chief pulled no punches after their 3-2 defeat at The Elms in a derby clash that produced some sublime finishing and plenty of niggle.

“We were rubbish,” Fisher said straight after the match. “They deserved it from start to finish, we were poor.

“They passed the ball better than we did, there are no excuses, they outpassed us and they should have done that with the players that I have.

“I switched it in the second half and we were a little bit better, but if we had got anything from it I’d have felt sorry for them because they deserved the three points.

“I told all the lads what would happen, they’d be singing and dancing, so be it, you’ll hear the herberts up the road.”

Shriveham took the lead in the third minute when Josh Fowler struck the ball sweetly from 30 yards and left Gary Stevens stranded.

Highworth pushed for an equaliser, but it was the visitors who doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time.

A Craig Bowden shot from 20 yards was turned behind by Stevens and from the resulting corner the Worthians handled the ball in the box and Matt Brown drilled home the spot kick.

Highworth pulled a goal back on 70 minutes when skipper TJ Bohane rose highest at the back post to meet Toby Clark’s cross and head the ball into the far corner.

But Shrivenham were not going to let this match slip them by and a superb strike from Dave Coleman, after he waltzed his way through the hosts’ defence, 10 minutes later restored the Barrington Park men’s two-goal advantage.

However, there was still time for one more twist as Bohane fired the ball home from 25 yards to set up a nervy final two minutes for Sam Collier’s side.

“There have been so many times where we have been winning 2-0 and got nothing, so it was important that we stuck together and have some belief,” said Collier, who passed a late fitness test on a groin injury.

“Even when we went 2-1 I thought here we go again, but we went and got another one.

“Considering the times that we had led against good sides and got nothing, today was a credit to the lads, we defended from the front and scored some good goals.

“They deserve this, the season we have had it has been tough to win a local derby is pleasing and we deserved it.”
