HELLENIC LEAGUE: Fringe players to get their chance at Fairford

Swindon Advertiser: Fairford boss Paul Braithwaite Fairford boss Paul Braithwaite

PAUL Braithwaite will using this weekend’s final game to have a look at some of his fringe players as his side have already achieved a fourth place finish in Hellenic League Division One West.

Last week’s last-minute win meant that whatever happens in Saturday’s game with Old Woodstock Braithwaite’s side will not move up or down a place.

A couple of months ago it was looking as if Fairford would be pushing for promotion to the Premier Division but even given the spate of draws the Cinder Lane club have had recently it is unlikely that would have been possible given the form of the sides above them in the table.

Both Tytherington and Liydney have been imperious since Christmas only losing only handful of games between them.

Shortwood started so well that their lead also proved impossible to close even with their indifferent 2014 form.

Braithwaite had mixed feelings about how his side’s season had panned out.

“I’m disappointed we’re not higher than we achieved last year, but we lost seven of 11 starters.

“The players we’ve got our fantastic, a tight nit group, they get on, work hard, from that point of view it’s been good,” said Braithwaite.

“We’ve done what we needed to do, we can’t go any higher than we can now, even with the draws we had, the results of teams above have meant we probably wouldn’t have caught them anyway.

“Billy Lowery will get his first start, we’ll look at one or two other others, Colin Curtis, who has been out for a while will play. It’s a reward for the lads who have been good and waited for their chance.

“We can enjoy the game and stick to our principals.

“Stick to the standard that we set and play the way we usually do, the players that come in will not make the squad any weaker.

“The core of the players we’ve got at the moment will set us up well for next season.”
