QUEENSFIELD boss Pete Smith is confident his side’s firepower will be enough to upset Fratellos in the Swindon Advertiser Cup final on Saturday.

Queensfield won 2-0 on Saturday and have finished runners-up in the Swindon & District Premier Division to their cup final opposition. They have also lost both encounters to the unbeaten Fratellos 2-1 this season, two of five defeats that meant they were well adrift of first place.

However those two defeats are the only times Smith’s team have failed to score more than one goal. The Yellows have produced some eye-catching scorelines this season, hitting more than seven goals on six occasions, including the 10-0 drubbing which they inflicted on strugglers Kingsdown.

This has been mostly down to their hot-shot strike duo of Aaron Wellend and Shane Hibbard, who are the two topscorers in the league and have more than 50 goals between them this season.

Smith is hoping Queenfield’s gung-ho approach will bring their second cup title in three years.

“Both teams have got so much fire power going forward, our a way is if we let in three we’ll score six,” said Smith, “I think we’ve got a bit too much firepower so I’m confident.

“The only thing left going for us is the cup, so we’re going to focus 100 per cent on that.

“Fratellos have beaten us twice 2-1, it’s been stupid mistakes or set pieces that have gone against us, in the last one I gave away a penalty in the 87th minute.”

Over the past few years Queensfield and Fratellos have been battling it out in the league and cup. The last two seasons have seen Fratellos finish the league on top with Queensfield runners-up, but when these two last met in Swindon Advertiser Cup final in 2012 it was Smith’s team who took the win - 2-0 on that occasion.

It has helped a healthy competetive edge develop when the two sides meet, which Smith enjoys.

“There’s a bit of a rivalry, yeah. Every time we see them there’s a bit banter. I have it with Anthony (Pascarella, Fratellos manager), you know just a bit of banter. We know their team and they know ours.”

Queensfield will be preparing this week with a bit six-a-side midweek and some team bonding on the night before the game.

“We’ll meet up and have have a drink and have a crack and that, a few people are near the end of the football so they’re all up for it.”

One of those stalwarts who Smith referred to is Michael Chivers, one of the side’s leaders, who, despite being 40 and a Queensfield veteran of more than 10 years has refused to say whether this will be his last season.

Ahead of the final Smith wanted to thank his brother Tony - who along with Pete and David Burke make three brothers in the Queensfield team - who has taken on some of the responsibility for secretarial work this season.

Queensfield squad in their own words

Lewis Bateman (GK) - Back with the club after a few seasons away, quick off his line and a great shot stopper.
Philip Mapstone (RB) - Fast and strong defender but thinks he is a striker, but one goal all season says it all.
David Burke (CB) - Old fashioned defender never lets the team down and always gives 100 per cent.
Matthew Hiscocks (CB) - Outstanding defender and never seems to miss a tackle. Ever present this season a great asset to the team.
Pete Smith (LB) - Player/manager can play anywhere across the back four. Biggest moaner in the side but the team wouldn’t have him any other way.
Lee Farnhill (LB) - First season with the club, good defender when he turns up.
Christopher Price (LM) - Sweet left foot can score goals from any range. Happy to be playing in one final this weekend.
Michael Chivers (CM) - Oldest player in the team but with the best engine and never stops working for the squad.
Roger Mundy (CM) - Big time player saves his best games for the finals.
Anthony McCusker (CM) - First full season with the club, lovely ball player and can unlock any defence.
Kelvin Spencer (RM) - Can play anywhere in midfield hitting form at the right time. Scorer of spectacular goals.
Aaron Wellend (CF) - Skilful and intelligent player, can score from anywhere on the pitch.
Shane Hibbert (CF) - Powerful forward, never stops working for the team but sometimes passes too much.
Callum Mundy (CF) - Youngest player in the squad. Scored his first goal Saturday, hopefully to be the first of many.
Tony Smith (CF) - Assistant manager, regular scorer and behind-the-scenes club man. Does all the paperwork that used to confuse his brother Pete with aplomb.
