KELVIN Young’s trainer Richard Farnan insists that there is no danger of the IBO intercontinental champion peaking too soon ahead of his summer title defence.

The Penhill super-middleweight has been back in training for the Oasis Leisure Centre showdown on June 7 for several weeks now and has already been sparring with Carl Froch ahead of his huge IBF/WBA title clash with Swindon-trained George Groves.

And while Farnan says that the 27-year-old is ready to do the 10-round distance now, he insists that his charge won’t be overcooked come fight night.

“There is no danger of Kelv peaking too soon,” Farnan said. “What I’m doing at the moment is going really hard for the next couple of weeks so it is a shock to the system and it is all about tapering down.

“He can do 10 rounds now, he is showing more power and has been looking really good in sparring with Carl Froch.”

Young was set to head to Sheffield again on Wednesday having spent Monday at Gary Lockett’s gym in South Wales and Farnan was hoping to end the week with a trip to London.

“Kelvin did a bit with Chris Eubank junior in Sheffield last week,” Farnan said. “He got on really well and I’m waiting to hear back from his trainer Ronnie Davies and going down there on Friday.”

The trainer also said that they were nearing finding out who Young will face in the first defence of the title that he won back in September.

Prior to his last fight with Tomas Kugler back in March, Young and Farnan were both hoping to manoeuvre their way into the IBO’s top 35 and earn a shot at the main belt, which is currently held by South African Thomas Oosthuizen.

The show at the Oasis Leisure Centre is also set to include Lawrence Bennett’s first defence of the Southern Area cruiserweight title he won last month.

Bad Boy Bennett claimed the belt with a 98-94 points decision over Margate’s Jack Morris in London March 27.

Promoter Keith Mayo is also hoping to include a third title bout on the bumper summer bill with Ricky Pow being lined up for a shot at the IBO Latino light-heavyweight strap.

However, the Alicante-based fighter is facing former WBA world champion Gabriel Campillo on May 9 at the Gran Canaria Arena, Las Palmas, Islas Canarias, Spain in a 10-round non-title contest prior to any title contest.
