LOWER Stratton and Old Town United meet tomorrow in the George Thomas/Don Rogers Cup at Swindon Supermarine.

Swindon & District Premier side Old Town should be considered favourites against Lower Stratton from Division One but neither manager, Chris Wood of Old Town and Alan Spring of Lower Stratton, are taking anything for granted.

Both clubs have enjoyed successul seasons. Old Town have consolidated their place in the Premier, having won promotion last season; Lower Stratton have responded strongly to their relegation to Division One by winning the league title.

For Spring, tomorrow’s game is about upsetting the odds and achieving another feet for his club that has never been done before.

“We look at ourselves as the underdogs and it would be nice for us if we could turn the odds around,” said Spring.

“We’ve had a good season, we won the league, Lower Stratton have never won a District title before, we’ve been promoted but never won it. It’s a bonus to be in the final, if we can win it would top off our season.

“This is our opportunity to do a double.

“It’s fantastic for the club and the individual players, it’s been a real team effort this season, it’s nice to see the lads enjoying their game and getting something out of it.”

Wood’s Old Town team have developed a reputation of being somewhat cup specialists. They have reached finals in either the George Thomas/Don Rogers or the Swindon Advertiser competitions for the last three seasons, albeit without winning any. It’s a record that Wood is hoping to correct this time around.

“We are considered favourites but it’s a cup final and anything can happen.

“We’ve failed to win any of our last three cup finals, hopefully it’s going to be different this time,” Wood told the Advertiser.

“We’re not going to change too much, we’ve worked this year on three or four different formations to deal with different things, the main things is to apply pressure and score as many goals as possible, obviously.

“This is our third time in a row (in a cup final), it is something we look forward to it and we always pull out something extra for the cup games.

“I think it’s a tradition we’ve built at the club, we’re only three years old in the District but everyone that joins knows we’re a good cup side and gets into it.”

The George Thomas/Don Rogers Cup precedes the Swindon Advertiser Cup at Swindon Supermarine, kicking off at 11am.
