WALCOT’S pair of former England Schoolboy internationals, Michael Price and Jimmy McDonagh, both came safely through their regional box-offs in the Junior ABA Championships on Sunday.

Price encountered Morgan Hart from the Downend Boxing Club in Bristol in a Class B, (57kgs) clash.

The Walcot boxer looked comfortable from the outset, and scored repeatedly on the counter throughout opening two minutes.

The next two rounds mirrored the first, with Price’s southpaw right jabs and straight lefts finding their mark repeatedly.

A one-sided contest ended with a unanimous point victory for the Walcot boxer.

McDonagh met Marcus Preddy of the Broad Plain Boys Club in Bristol, at Class B, (52kgs).

Out of the ring for seven months, McDonagh was slowly into his stride during the opening round, allowing Preddy to land with slightly the greater number of scoring shots.

However the Walcot boxer raised his game during the middle session, getting nicely into range and scoring with a number of straight shots.

A heavy left jab-straight right combination towards the end of the round stunned Preddy, and meant he had to receive a standing count from the referee. The final two minutes were more even as both boxers tired, but McDonagh was awarded a unanimous points decision by all three judges.

Walcot coach Dave Veysey was happy with his two boxers, saying: “Michael boxed really well today and he looked to a real class act.

“Jimmy was a bit rusty after seven months out of the ring, but he improved as the bout developed and is very strong at the weight.”
