SWINDON TOWN: Cooper narrows down transfer aims

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper

SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper is targeting a centre-back, a full-back and a centre-forward this summer.

The Robins boss has previously stated that he is looking to recruit four new faces to the Town squad during the upcoming transfer window, and now he's picked out the positions he's particularly interested in.

"I look at the squad and we have probably still got three or four too many for where we are at the moment," he told FLIC Wiltshire.

"We probably need to replace those three or four with three or four new faces so it will be an interesting summer, how we go about shaping the squad and I would suggest that the players we get in will be younger.

"Jack Stephens has gone back to Southampton, we have lost Jay McEveley so we probably need to bring in a central defender, if we could get a left footed one that would be ideal and we probably need a left sided full-back or a wing back.

"We need another centre-forward too."

Agree about the CB and CF
.
But LB???? We have Byrne there and Matty Jones has just come up and is a LB - so surely that is the 2 needed
.
RB also sorted with Thompson and Barthram
.
I take it then we are not going to play wingers as he doesn't state we need any - we only really have Tijane and possibly Williams who can play there
.
So it is looking 532
.
Surely we need a new CM - a big issue we had this year is that they were all too similar so need something different in there
.
Ideally a DCM to sit hold and break things up
.
Then Louis and Kasim can compete for the box-to -box role
.
With Luongo and Barker for the attacking role
.
But where does that leave Harley? Or is he one Cooper would like to move on after failing to impress this year and in fact missed a lot of it!

Bartram worries me,he was shocking against Rotherham overweight, not interested pulling out of most tackles,he looked and played like a player who has been told he is not wanted and look for another club .there had to be better fullbacks available. I can't understand how we would keep him and get rid of Alex Smith

Why do people keep mentioning Jones as the left back for next season, he's a kid fresh out the youth team, he will need time to be phased in, be lucky if he plays 5 games next season. We will need someone with a little more experience than that.

Im sure there are plenty of options out there for players not just left backs, just need to get this high court business sorted so that we can actually do some business in the transfer market

Because when you cut your squad down you have to be prepared to use all of them!
.
Louis Thompson was exactly the same this season is as Matty Jomes will be next year - and he certainly played more than 5!
.
Also no one is saying he should be our left back - well I'm not - I'm saying he should be our back up left back behind Byrne who I expect to play most of the season
.
If we have no faith in the lad - then why sign him? Also why let Smith go?

The striker HAS to be Westcarr, recently released by Walsall, 17 goals last season and always gets around that mark at this level. I dont care who the other signings are as long as we get Stephens, Westcarr, extend Troy and keep our key players.

Team next year:
Fods
N.Thompson,Stephens,
Troy
Tijane, Luongo, Kasim,L.thompson, Byrne
Westcarr, Smith

Although it wont be that because you just cant predict STFC

Shrewsbury's Joe Jacobson is the best left back at our level, but doubt we could get him, good captain as well.

I can't believe Scunthorpe have let Conner Jennings go - the lad which was on loan at Macclesfield and scored 14 - including against us
.
I always thought he looked like a good prospect and certainly fits our model
.
699 - I mooted Westcarr - but Midland said he had seen him a few times and said don't let the 17 goals fool us - as his general hold up play was poor
.
You also have to ask why are Walsall releasing him if he is that good?

I take it you mean as a more realistic target?

Goldborne, Bidwell, Laird and Lewington are all currently in L1 and better than Jacobson but out of our reach

Bloggers suggesting Westcarr, please don't. I'm from Birmingham and watch Walsall from time to time when I don't go to Swindon and I can tell you with the utmost confidence, we should NOT sign him.

The 17 goals he has scored this season, although seems impressive to the unlearned eye is nothing more but deception. His positioning is poor, he can't hold the ball up and he can't head the ball to save his life. And out of the games I've watched, he tends to miss a lot of chances. He reminds me of Michael Smith, and I don't think either is the answer for a playoff push. We must look elsewhere IMO.

On the other hand, would like to see Stevens back here next season, however I think the Championship clubs will come calling for a player of his quality. And with the possibility of losing Troy, we have have to possibility recruit 2 CBs.

And just a quick observation on Cooper's plans, it seems to me that he still retains a rosey picture of the abilities of our midfield players. We still need an EXPERIENCED CRUNCHER in midfielder (nothing against Louis, hence the experienced attribute). Without such a player the defects that were clear during the poor 11 match run, may occur again.

Cooper needs to broaden his arisens and be a bit more ambitious.

Why get rid of an U21 international on the fringes of the 1st team with PDC, 6 foot 6 and a prospect with a left foot as good as his right and can play any position if needed, just to bring in new defenders????? I thought money was tight???

Aaron Oakley could have done the job!

Mark Ellis C/B is now a free agent,25 years old big and strong was excellent against us for Torquey and also good for Crewe.has not been offered new deal at crewe due to cost cutting ( similar to Jay situation with us) would be a good signing.
