A CYRIL Koomson hat-trick helped Greenmeadow Youth to a 5-0 cup victory over Croft Juniors Red on Saturday.

The first cup final of the busy weekend pitted under 11 league champions Greenmeadow Youth against runners-up Croft.

The champions went ahead very early in the game as a scramble in the goalmouth within the first few minutes was bundled over the line by Filipe De Abreu Dias.

Before the 10th minute, Greenmeadow had doubled their lead, as the dangerous Koomson found space under the crossbar after a corner to volley past Connor Wilson in the Croft goal.

Moments later, the keeper was responsible for keeping the scores at 2-0 when he made a fantastic save from Josh Sawford’s powerful long-range effort.

Greenmeadow continued to dominate, creating a number of chances, forcing several corners, and having two strong penalty shouts ignored by the referee, but at half-time the score remained 2-0.

A tentative start by both sides to the second half was forgotten when Dias broke into the Croft area.

But when his shot was blocked, it found Thomas Lane on the edge of the box who unleashed an unstoppable half-volley into the top right corner on 15 minutes.

Koomson continued to look dangerous and bagged his second after latching onto a long ball and firing a low drive home.

Two minutes later he secured his hat-trick as he neatly flicked past onrushing Wilson to make it 5-0 and a league and cup double for Greenmeadow.

Greenmeadow manager Martin Doyle said: “Two years ago Cyril didn’t even get on the pitch, now he’s our main striker and he’s got a hat-trick today, so that shows how much he’s improved.

“His speed, energy and strength is fantastic and he took his chances really well today.

“We didn’t really miss many chances as a team which was the difference. I didn’t expect as many goals as that today.”

Though his side won two of the three competitions available to them this season, Doyle is still smarting over a 2-1 Wiltshire Cup final defeat to Salisbury City that denied him a treble.

He added: “Next season, we want to go one better. We dominated that game (against Salisbury) and it could have been a treble this season not a double.

“We have two of the leading scorers in the league so I’m sure we can be successful again.”
