NORTH WILTS YOUTH U12 CUP FINAL: Rangers end perfect season on a high

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon Rangers lift the under 12 trophy Swindon Rangers lift the under 12 trophy

SWINDON Rangers made it a perfect season by winning the cup.

Dave Steed’s side had not lost a game this term coming into Saturday’s final and added the cup to their league win, with a 2-0 victory over FC Chippenham.

Rangers started the brighter and hit the post with barely a minute of the first half gone.

Jordan Murray burst down the right wing and powered a shot which hit the post and bounced clear.

From the resulting corner striker Jack Paines had the ball in the net, but Rangers’ celebrations were cut short by the linesman’s flag.

Rangers continued to dominate play and carved out a number of other chances as their notable size advantage had a large effect.

Charlie Slade had to be at his acrobatic best to twice deny Rangers captain Harry Rule from distance, Gabriel Costello fired over from the best chance of the half after Slade had made yet another impressive save.

But Chippenham looked dangerous on the counter attack, Lee Cooper came closest for them as he fizzed an effort past George Wilkins’ post in the dying moments of the first half.

After the break, Rangers took the lead when Rule broke down the right from the kick off and his drilled cross hit the unfortunate Jake Bailey two yards out for an own goal off the upright.

Five minutes later, Paines should have doubled the advantage when through one-on-one, but he pulled his shot wide.

A well-worked corner saw Rangers go 2-0 up as Charlie Begley steered home Zack Skimmer-Stewart’s flag-kick.

Steed said: “It’s a great feeling. I think we’re the first side to have won the cup four years consecutively and to have gone the season unbeaten is something I’m really proud of.

“At Rangers we have history with this and we had an under 15 side who went unbeaten for a whole season, unfortunately that had to disband since many of them went on to professional clubs.

“This group here is one of the best I’ve worked with and it’s what I started Swindon Rangers to be able to do.”
