A KAMRAN Muhid double helped Abbey Meads Under 13s to come from behind and beat Brinkworth Cats 3-1 in the U13 cup on Saturday.

Harry Brinkworth-Smith had opened the scoring for the Cats, before Muhid’s brace was added to by Joel Smedley with five minutes remaining.

The game began with very little between the sides, Brinkworth winger Dan Farley had half a chance from a corner, but couldn’t properly connect.

Abbey Meads striker Harry Sealey was then put clean through, but his shot was straight at keeper Jack Harper.

From that chance, Cats went up the other end and scored, although it appeared that defender Alfie Moulding had gotten back to clear Brinkworth-Smith’s effort from the line, the assistant disagreed and awarded Brinkworth the lead.

With 15 minutes on the clock, Muhid grabbed the equaliser after dribbling past three Brinkworth players and calmly slotting past Harper.

Shortly afterwards, Sealey was denied by the post and Abbey Meads couldn’t bundle the rebound home.

Again the woodwork played its part as the wind took Muhid’s cross over the head of Harper, and onto the post.

Either side could have been ahead at the break had good chances not been missed, first by Sealey then by Farley, but neither could convert.

Shortly after the restart Abbey Meads took the lead for the first time as Muhid grabbed his second after a mix up in the Brinkworth defence.

The wind was aiding Abbey Meads as Brinkworth struggled to get the ball out of their half without the conditions pushing it back in the direction it came.

Abbey Meads had plenty of chances to increase their lead, most notably through Sealey and Mahid going for his hat-trick, before they had substitute keeper Max Matthews to thank for keeping them ahead.

He made a great save from Adam Thorn at his near post with less than 10 minutes remaining when totally abandoned by his defence.

With just four minutes left on the clock, Joel Smedley made sure for Abbey Meads as he capitalised on another defensive mix up and tapped home to the delight of his manager, and father, Martin Smedley.

Smedley senior said: “It’s a real treat on a personal level to see your boy score here at the County Ground, but to be honest all the achievement is that of the boys in there.

“We came into the season not expecting to do much and have won the league and cup double so that's a great achievement.

“That lot have been together since under six level so they’ve all grown up together and the most important thing is that they’re all friends, they’ll enjoy this together and they’ve worked so hard to get here beating a lot of division one teams on the way.”
