WALCOT boxers Jimmy McDonagh and Michael Price both emerged victorious from the Western Counties Junior ABA Finals in Bristol last Sunday, writes Dave Veysey.
Fifteen-year-old McDonagh faced Luke Saward from the Downend Boxing Club in Bristol in a Class B, 52kgs contest.
The opening two minutes saw the Walcot boxer advance with two-fisted attacks, while the Bristolian looked to slip and score on the counter.
Most of the scoring shots were landed by McDonagh, and he clearly took the opening session.
The Walcot ace increased the pressure during the second round, keeping closer to his opponent and landing with several heavy straight lefts and rights.
A prolonged attack from the former England Schoolboy International pinned Saward on the ropes, where he received a standing count.
Realising his boxer was distressed, Saward’s cornerman immediately threw his towel into the ring.
Following McDonagh into the ring was Price, his 15-year-old cousin and club mate.
He faced Sam Elvins from the Paddy Johns Gym in Bristol in a Class B, 57kgs match.
Few scoring shots were landed by either boxer during a quiet opening round, with the slightly more purposeful work coming from the Walcot boxer.
The middle session saw Price increase his workrate to score with southpaw right jabs and straight lefts to take the session.
The former England Schoolboy International coasted home during the final two minutes to record a unanimous points’ victory.
