Stuttering Simon set to be given more time to prove himself to Swindon boss
SIMON Gustafsson will be given the chance to prove himself for Swindon Robins this week as question marks remain over his future.
Robins boss Alun Rossiter admitted after his side’s away losses at Wolves and King’s Lynn this week that he was seriously considering the Swede’s position, following a return of only a combined seven points from the two meetings.
However, despite admitting he has identified a couple of possible replacements, Rossiter will not pull the trigger on Gustafsson ahead of this week’s home clash with Leicester and Saturday’s visit to former club Eastbourne.
Instead, the Robins boss will move the Swede to the slightly easier number two spot ahead of the meetings in a bid to try and get the best out of his winter signing.
“I really believed he was going to be the one who could be our trump card because he really has so much talent and potential, it’s just he’s not quite showing it at the moment and I really don’t know why,” Rossiter said.
“Simon has a little bit more time but I have a few irons in the fire of riders I fancy putting in, with maybe a few shocks.
“He’s got a couple more meetings and I’m not threatening him with the sack, but he has Swindon on Thursday (against Leicester) and then certainly Eastbourne to try and start turning his season around.
“I’m concerned, and I should be because he has to be beating the draft riders. I back the riders all the way but you can only back them so far.”
Gustafsson has only managed five heat wins from 40 outings this season, an average of one win very two meetings, and has regularly been beaten by riders graduating from the National League for the 2014 season.
