SWINDON Spitfires under 14s battled hard in their Oxford Mail Girls League Cup final but fell to a 2-1 defeat to Kidlington.

The game was always going to be a close affair, with Kidlington crowned as league winners and Spitfires as runners-up, and the game started tentatively as both teams took their time to find their feet.

Spitfires broke the deadlock after 10 minutes when Helena Butcher poked home at the front post from an Elle Scott corner.

Four minutes later Kidlington were awarded a penalty for obstruction, only for keeper Danielle Jones to save Amberley Vircars’s spot-kick.

But Jones was adjudged to have come off her line, the referee ordered a re-take and Vircars made no mistake with her second attempt.

Spitfires started the second half strongly and took the game to the Oxfordshire side, creating some decent chances.

However, it was Kidlington who took the lead against the run of play when Lucy Durham gambled on a long ball forward and found herself in between Jones and Georgia Botfield from where she was able to bundle the ball over the line.

Minutes later Spitfires could well have had a penalty after Nat Goodright’s shot appeared to be blocked by the outstretched arm of a Kidlington defender.

Spitfires continued to push for the equaliser and thought they had it with five minutes remaining when Scott picked up a loose ball 30 yards out and her long range strike bounced over the keeper and in to the goal.

However, the goal was disallowed as Spitfires players in the box were deemed to be offside and interfering with play.

Spitfires continued to battle until an equaliser.

Combined with the cup finals were the presentations to the various winners and runners-up of the Oxford Girls League, and Spitfires were well represented.

As well as the under 14s being runners-up in the league and cup, the under 12s, 15s and 17s were also runners-up of their respective leagues and were able to collect their trophies.

The under 13s ended their season with a 1-1 draw against Melksham Town in the Wiltshire League.

Already crowned champions these were the first points dropped by Spitfires, with Gipsy Viveash netting their only goal.

Spitfires reserves ended their Wiltshire League campaign with an 8-4 success over Marlborough Town thanks to a Caroline Hook hat-trick, a brace from Katie Wadey and strikes from Zoe Gleaves, Zofia Stepien and Natalia Wilson.
