GYMNASTICS: Halford on the trail for more gold in Glasgow
LAURA Halford now has her sights firmly set on this summer’s Commonwealth Games following her stunning success at the British Rhythmic Championships at the weekend.
The Cricklade gymnast put in the performance of a lifetime to secure the all-around title and victories in hoop, ball and ribbon apparatus finals in Stoke, retaining the crown she won last year.
Halford, 18, is set to represent Wales in Glasgow this summer, although the team will not be announced until June 7, but is heading into the major championship in confident mood following her recent displays.
“I’m going to be focusing completely on the Commonwealths now, which will but tough I know but I’m really excited,” he said.
“Competing in Glasgow would feel amazing but I haven’t secured my place yet because the team hasn’t been announced.
“We had five selection events over the last few months and we had to get certain scores in those events and then they get to pick from those.
“Hopefully my performance in these championships will be enough for me to get in and then I just want to do my best.”
It took a few days for Halford’s achievement to truly sink in but, now she has realised what she has done, she’s proud all her hard work eventually paid off.
“It feels amazing and, while it’s sunk in now, I could really believe how well I had done at the weekend,” she said.
“I hoped I could win but I knew how tough the competition was, maybe the toughest it’s ever been, so I just wanted to go there for myself and would have been happy as long as I had done my best.
“Anything else would have been amazing but everything else was such a bonus.”
