SWINDON Allstars reached the final of the United Communities six-a-side tournament at Dorcan Sports Centre.

The eight-team competition brought footballers from all over the country together with teams from London, Birmingham and Luton descending on the town.

With four sides from Swindon taking part, it was the Allstars who flew the flag as they finished runners-up.

Having defeated the Underdogs in the semi-final 2-0, the Allstars found the London Tigers too strong as they ran out 4-0 winners.

Swindon Mavericks, having suffered defeat in the group stages, went on to beat Birmingham 3-0 to lift the Plate, while Rangers went out in the Plate competition.

The tournament, which is in its 10th year, is aimed at bringing communities from across the country together and organiser Kamal Miah was delighted with how the whole day went.

“We bring together people from all walks of life,” Miah said. “You have got players from different backgrounds, from different cultures and there are a number of nationalities all united through football.

“It is all about enjoying yourselves and making new friends and since we have been doing this we have also gone to Birmingham and London to play in tournaments.”

Although this year’s competition at the Dorcan Sports Centre was down on numbers, Miah is hoping that next year’s event will see a return to 10 teams.

“Last year we had 10 teams and I’m hoping that we can go back to that again next year,” he said.

“Most of this is done through word of mouth and the tournament is about respect and unity as well as competitiveness.

“Most of us all play outside of this tournament as well so it is great that we can all get together to play in this competiton.”
