IN only his third triple jump competition Aaron Bishop smashed his personal best to lift the senior boys’ title at the Wiltshire Schools’ Track & Field Championships.

The 18-year-old Swindon New College student soared to 12.52m to win his first county schools’ title and book his place in the Wiltshire squad for the South West Schools’ Championships at Yeovil next week (June 21).

In his only two previous attempts at the event Bishop, who only joined Swindon Harriers last year, cleared 10.79m and 10.38m, the latter giving him third place in the Wiltshire Clubs’ Championships.

The new PB lifts Bishop up to seventh in the South West Rankings for Under 20 men.

He wasn’t the only jumper to impress at Salisbury with four other gold medals won by Swindon athletes.

Fellow New College student Lydia Rogers completed an impressive double in the senior girls long and triple jumps.

The 17-year-old recorded a personal best of 4.74m to win the long jump, adding six centimetres to her previous outdoor best and then won the triple with 9.84m, which was just below her PB of 10.02m.

Ridgeway School provided the other two long jump gold medallists in Johnny Dowell and Marcus Raymond.

Dowell will be delighted to finally make the top of the podium in the inter boys’ age group after winning bronze in 2011 and silver in 2012 – he was only sixth last year – as he cleared a huge 5.88m to smash his previous best of 5.08m.

In the junior boys’ event 14-year-old Raymond added the schools’ title to his clubs’ success last month as he jumped 5.34m, just three centimetres below his recent PB. That leap put Raymond second in the South West Rankings for Under 15 boys.

The other Swindon gold medal winners all came on the track.

Swindon New College 17-year-old Ciaran Cooper was a class apart in the senior boys’ 800m clocking a steady 2mins 3secs while 16-year-old Ridgeway School student Callum Bampton won the inter boys’ 3000m in 9:13.0.

Then in the junior boys’ 800m Harry Kearns of Isambard Community School clocked a useful 2mins 06secsfor victory and to go third on the South West Rankings for Under 15 boys.
