WOOTTON Bassett captain Darren Beasant insists that there will be no overreaction to his side’s first defeat of the season.

The Rylands Way side fell to a two-wicket loss at Swindon Civil Service and also saw their lead at the top of Wiltshire League Division One slip from their grasp.

Despite this reverse to Civil Service, Beasant is nonetheless pleased with the how his side have began the campaign.

“It was frustrating,” Beasant said. “But we have won four and only lost one so there is no point over reacting and we are just one point off the top.”

Having made a reasonable start with the bat, Bassett were 85-1 at Penhill, they collapsed to 169 all out after Andy Mildenhall claimed a hat-trick for the hosts despite 65 from Sam Lawro.

Civil Service then edged over the line with two balls and two wickets to spare with Mildenhall unbeaten on 24 at the end.

“We weren’t good enough with the bat or the ball,” Beasant said. “We got out with some very poor shots and decisions and we lacked discipline with the ball.

“We should have got at least another 20 or 30 runs, but then again we should have been able to defend 170.

“However, you have to give credit to Civil Service they played well and are always a tough side to beat.”

While Bassett have been replaced by Malmesbury at the top of the league, Beasant insists that his side will come back stronger.

“We have all got to work harder,” he said. “We need show more discipline, but we must remain calm.”
