Walcot youngster Hunt secures BoxCup success

WALCOT boxer Drew Hunt won the gold medal for his age group at under 38kgs in the first-ever Bristol BoxCup last weekend, writes Dave Veysey.

The tournament, which raised money for Bristol’s Childrens’ Hospital, attracted some of the top 11 and 12 year olds from across the country, with weight categories ranging from 30kgs to 44kgs.

The 11-year-old Swindonian clinched the gold with a third round stoppage victory over Nathan Hughes from Chard ABC.

From the opening bell the Dorcan pupil went on the attack, scoring with fast left jabs and straight rights.

Hughes retreated away from the onrushing Walcot boxer, and landed with very little himself.

Drew continued the same pattern during the second session, outscoring the Chard youngster and totally dominating the round.

At the start of the last round a six punch combination found the target for the Walcot boxer, and the referee decided the Somerset lad had endured enough and stopped the contest.

During his semi final the previous day, Hunt had won a close contest with High Wycombe’s Chanze Ballentyne on points.

Clubmate Nigel Harris met with the more experienced Benny Eastwood from the Repton Boys’ Club in his final, having received a bye at the semi final stage.

The 12-year-old put up a battling performance in only his second contest before losing out to a unanimous points’ decision.

Walcot chief coach Harry Scott was pleased with both of his young boxers, saying: “This tournament has provided some valuable experience for these two youngsters.

“They both put up a good display, and Drew’s gold medal means we end the season on a high.”
