JONATHAN Smith is looking forward to locking horns with Swindon Town after his Luton Town side drew his former employers in the Capital One Cup.

The midfielder was an integral part of the Robins’ League Two title winning side in 2012 before making the switch to York City. But now the 27-year-old, who played 38 times for Swindon during the championship winning campaign, is plying his trade at the newly promoted Hatters and is relishing the tie.

“I have very good memories of Swindon,” Smith told the Advertiser. “I had a great time at the club, the fans were superb and being part of the title winning side was fantastic.

“It is an interesting draw for me having been part of that squad, but I’m pleased that we have got the home tie.

“Luton have a got a very good cup pedigree and hopefully we will do well in what will be a very close match.”

Swindon’s trip to Luton will be the first time the two teams have met in the League Cup, despite both of them winning the competition in 1969 and 1988 respectively.

And with Mark Cooper’s men in League One they will undoubtedly go into the contest as firm favourites.

However, Smith says that the Hatters are on a high having sealed their return to the Football League after five seasons in the Conference.

“Everyone at the club is excited about the new season,” Smith said. “We have good players and a good manager in John Still.

“The fans are very much like the ones in Swindon, excellent, and I think that their will be a fantastic atmosphere when we play each other.”

Smith will be hoping that he will have no injury concerns over the pre-season after working so hard to return from a broken ankle for the final game of the previous campaign.

The midfielder sustained the injury on Boxing Day and came off the bench in Luton’s last game in the Conference.

“It was a nasty injury,” Smith said. “It was my first real bad one and I managed to work so hard to get back before the end of the season.

“I’m working hard now so that when we return to pre-season training I can hit the ground running and make that I’m strong for the new campaign.”

Paul Benson will also be looking to shoot Swindon out of the cup when the two sides met in August.

The striker was released by the County Ground team at the end of last term and is expected to sign a permanent deal with Luton on July 1 following a season’s long loan at Kenilworth Road.
