PURTON captain Elliot Hill will be looking for a much-improved performance in the field from his side when they make the trip to Wiltshire Division leaders Great Bedwyn.

Hill said that he was disappointed with how his team fielded in the seven-wicket defeat to Marshfield last Saturday and consequently focused this week’s training sessions to their work on the ground.

But the Purton captain will also look at the trip to the table-toppers to show just how far the team have come since gaining promotion from Wiltshire County League last term.

“We don’t go into this match fearing them, that is for sure,” Hill said. “They are a good side and top of the table.

“But we are more than capable of competing with them - this is an exciting fixture.”

Despite Purton’s start to the season, which has seen them win two and lose three, Hill feels that his side will be able to raise their game against the team that tops the table.

“Over the last couple of years we have enjoyed a lot of success,” he said. “But generally we have found that the better the opposition the better we play.

“Hopefully that will still be the case when we played Great Bedwyn tomorrow.”

Hill felt that during the defeat to Marshfield his side had let their standards in the field slip and that is something he is looking to rectify tomorrow.

“Our training this week has been focused on our work in the field,” Hill said. “We have been doing a lot of fielding drills and looking at ways to eradicate the four balls.

“At Purton we have prided ourselves over the last couple of seasons as being a good fielding side but we didn’t show that against Marshfield.

“We also need to iron out our inconsistencies from that as well.”

Hill says that he has a fully-fot squad to chose from tomorrow when they make the trip to the Malrborough-based side.

While Hill is pleased to have options at his disposal the skipper said that he was considering bringing Neil Little up from the seconds after his century last weekend took him over the 200 runs barrier in just four matches.
