CHRIS Aubrey knows the next two European Tour events hold the key to whether or not he has a chance of competing in this year’s World Championship.

Swindon players Aubrey, Dennis Smith and Johnny Haines are in action in the European Darts Open this weekend, with the three each needing a good run to push them towards Alexandra Palace in December.

Aubrey, who has also qualified for the European Darts Grand Prix in Germany in September, sits the lowest of the three in 92nd in the Pro Tour order of merit, but knows two big displays on the continent could put him in World Championship contention.

“My darts have been going quite well recently but you always need that little bit of luck,” he said. “When you’ve got it you’re always hoping it lasts but things don’t work like that.

“You have to take it as it comes and that’s what you have to try and do.

“I’m pleased to have made it to this tournament and if I can get through a few rounds that would be brilliant because there’s some decent money there.

“The World Championships are a little way off, I know that, but there’s nothing to say that two big performances this weekend and at the one in September could push me back into the mix.

“Realistically it’s a long way off but you never say never.

“These tournaments are my best chance of getting there so I hope I can do well.

“You have to take it one game at a time though and what will be, will be.”

Aubrey, Smith and Haines will find out their first round opponents this morning.
