BRITISH GP: Robins out in force in Cardiff

TROY Batchelor is far from the Robins’ only representative at tonight’s British Grand Prix in Cardiff.

While the Australian is looking to back up his success in Copenhagen a fortnight ago, an army of Swindon volunteers will be working behind the scenes to ensure the biggest event on the speedway calendar runs smoothly for riders and fans alike.

Led by Blunsdon clerk of the course Michael Hunt and pit marshal Andy Reynolds, who will be fulfilling the same roles at the Millennium Stadium tonight, a team of eight members of the regular Swindon track will be working on the temporary circuit in Wales when the best riders of the world battle it out for vital points in pursuit of the title.

Hunt has been assistant clerk at the GP for the last three years, backing up former Birmingham boss Phil Morris, but now the Welshman is in Chris Harris’ corner for the series, Hunt has been asked to step up.

The supermarket manager’s tasks vary from working with race director Tony Olsen to ensure the track is in good condition to making sure there are enough toilets for the riders, and is proud to be representing Swindon at the event.

“When they asked me to take on this job it really didn’t take me very long to say yes,” he said.

“I went out to Geneva for a course to make sure I was ready for this event because there is an awful lot to do.

“When you go to Swindon every week all the framework is in place to run a meeting, but Cardiff’s very different because you need to sort out the things from scratch because it’s a multi-use venue and obviously there’s only one speedway meeting a year.

“It’s a real honour to be a part of it all and the track’s looking good so we should be in for a good meeting.”
